Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit North Bengal on Sunday, marking her first tour of the region since the Lok Sabha elections. Her visit comes in response to the heavy rains that have wreaked havoc in the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, causing multiple landslides and severely impacting the lives of residents.
Heavy rains continue to lash several districts of North Bengal, and multiple landslides have led to damage to houses and infrastructure, while water levels of rivers in the plains have also risen significantly, posing a major threat to low-lying areas.
Mamata Banerjee will be arriving in Bagdogra on Sunday afternoon before proceeding to Darjeeling, where she will meet with flood-affected residents and assess the damage. She is also expected to hold an administrative meeting with officials from the Darjeeling district administration to review relief operations and devise a strategy to mitigate the crisis. Banerjee's visit aims to provide much-needed assurance to the people of the region, as she will gather firsthand information about the ongoing situation.
The Chief Minister will also travel to Siliguri after her Darjeeling visit to further assess the impact of the adverse weather conditions in the plains. This visit is seen as an important step in ensuring timely intervention and effective coordination between the administration and disaster response teams.
